Message from Dr. Booker: Sprint Through Spring and Primal Blueprint

Dr. William Booker of Capitol Rehab of ArlingtonAs we prepare for the start of May, it is safe to say that we have already begun our "Sprint Through Spring"!  So what does that mean to you?  Well, if you have goals of having that fit and healthy lifestyle or that summer beach body, now is the time to get started!  In this issue of the newsletter, we have a couple of great massage offers, and a simple 2 minute home exercise that will fire up your core in only a few seconds.

I just started a really interesting book called Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson.  Mark talks about combining modern genetic science with evolutionary biology.  Essentially, understanding the successful habits of our early ancestors, and comparing and contrasting with some of the modern science, and myths, that may in fact be contributing to the epidemic of disease and sickness.

I highly recommend the book and personally incorporate several of the tips.  I will be discussing many of these tips in greater detail, but to help us all get that Spring Jumpstart, let me share Mark's "10 Rules of Aging Well," I think they are useful and user friendly:

1. Eliminate Self Destructive Behavior
2. Eat Properly
3. Exercise
4. Manage Stress
5. Think Young
6. Get Rest
7.  Practice Good Hygiene
8.  Prudent Supplementation
9.  Proactive Living
10. Balance

Simple and straight forward, so let's get to it. As always, more to come in the days to come.

The Fundamental Core Exercise

This is the first core exercise that should be mastered by anyone interested in training "The Core". This fundamental movement incorporates functional breathing with both upper and lower extremity involvement, while sparing the spine from dangerous load and stress. One should master this movement before adding more challenging components to their core training.

Blog post: 5 Recommended Exercises for Seniors - But I Only Recommend 4 of the 5

I came across a good article on AOL addressing the ongoing movement to incorporate exercise with seniors as the preferred treatment for chronic pain.  People in the rehab industries have been preaching this for years. I like to remind my senior population that “exercise is not optionalâ€? and this goes for everyone over the age of 5!
